A defence official has confirmed that the MoD is actively investigating the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been advised to avoid talking about classified information in any vehicles.
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while travelling in China-made cars.
The minister explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that security is a issue in all modern cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
This announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
This broader security environment highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of government operations, from vehicle usage to discussions practices.
