British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
